A few words about the Pontekes pistachio variety
Pontekes is a green to green-white kernel variety that is harvested early in the season.
It originates from a selection of seedlings of the Aegenes variety carried out by Agricultural University of Athens Professor K. Pontikis in Greece. As a tree, it has semi-erect behavior and vigorous growth. It blooms in mid-season (mid-April) and its productivity is considered to be very good. The main pollinators are the “Gamma” or “Vita / Delta”.
It enters production at the 6th year and full production in the 13th year.
The fruit is oval shaped with one-sided bending. The size of the nut with shell is considered medium (0.96-0.99g). The color of the kernel is externally green and inside green to white-greenish. The quality of the kernel is considered to be very good.
The percentage of open pistachios is 78-90% and the kernel to shell ratio is 56-57%.
