INNOVATIVE NEW ALMOND CULTIVATION TECHNIC
Our nursery is proud to present the Super High Density (SHD) Almond cultivation. Since March of 2015 we have installed at Pieria region, 1 hectare which includes 4 new almond varieties with late blooming. Plantation distances are 1 meter plant by plant and 3,5 meters row by row. The rootstock that we used was from the Rootpac series of rootstocks with low vihour. In the upcoming september of 2017 we expect to harvest our first production which will be completed mechanically.
FIRST TIME IN GREECE MECHANICAL HARVEST OF ALMONDS BY TSESMELIS NURSERY
We have introduced new varieties with Spanish origin that are improving the productivity of new planted almond fields. Self-fertile varieties that reduce the danger of low production due to late season frosts. The floration is later than the old/traditional varieties. Combining self-fertility and late blossoming these new varieties secure production even at the hardest climate conditions.
This new cultivation system is designed so that the harvest will be executed mechanically. It is used the same machine that harvests olives in similar high density systems. This is procedure is really fast and much more economically efficient in comparison to the traditional way. This specialized machine can harvest up to 1 hectare by hour.
Attention! In order for this system to be succesfull it is required to be used special rootstocks. Those special rootstocks have low vigour and facilitate easier cultivation techniques and mechanical harvesting. If someone decides to use classical rootstocks (GF-677 – seedlings) the tree format will be problematic. Varieties grafted in GF-677 rootstock should be designed accordingly in order to become available for mechanical harvest.
When someone uses the SHD system the production per hectare is increased maybe even it can be doubled.
Labor costs in this new cultivation system is extremely low. One single producer with the help of special machines can prosduce a lot of hectares. Harvesting, pruning, ground cultivation and weed control are exclusively completed with machines.
