On the basis of the questions that we are being asked by a lot of producers about the ideal planting of almonds, we want to give you a clear example of an incorrect planting of almonds. In the video below we see that the planting distance between the trees is 1 meter and between the lines 3.5 meters. Also, the rootstock used is GF 677. As we can see in this particular field the trees are almost empty of kernels.
2018 could be described as an extremely productive year for all almond varieties. Even classical varieties like Ferragnes and Texas have a great yield. As you will see on your own in the video the trees in this farm are almost empty of seeds. The combination of dense planting with the especially vigor rootstock brought this result. The trees did not have room to grow and “spent” all their energy to find this room. The result was to create long vigorous shoots. These shoots are empty of leaves and the buds that would normally serve for next year’s production have died. Over the years this problem will become more and more intense as the producer will be forced to extirpate the trees on his farm because of the very small production they will have.
The conclusion is that producers should be careful about who they trust. There are many amateurs in the nurseries sector who give the wrong instruction that lead to financial loss and defamation of our profession. Incorrect planting leads to negative results.
